Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Announces New AAAS Fellows

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) investigators Lewis C. Cantley, PhD, and Cornelius P. Terhorst, PhD, have been awarded the distinction of AAAS Fellows by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.



They are among 504 members to be recognized this year for their distinguished efforts to advance science, and will be honored during the 2011 AAAS Annual Meeting in February.



Chief of BIDMC's Division of Signal Transduction and Director of the BIDMC Cancer Center, Cantley was honored for his distinguished contributions to the field of signal transduction and control of cell growth.



Terhorst, the Chief of BIDMC's Division of Immunology, was recognized for his contributions to the characterization of the CD3/T cell receptor complex, SLAM molecules and highly innovative studies on X-linked lymphoproliferative and inflammatory bowel diseases.



"The novel work of Drs. Cantley and Terhorst greatly enriches BIDMC's biomedical research enterprise," notes Vikas Sukhatme, MD, PhD, BIDMC's Chief Academic Officer. "These basic scientific discoveries are critical to medicine for they provide the foundation for tomorrow's therapeutic advances."



Cantley and Terhorst join the following BIDMC faculty as AAAS fellows: Seth Alper, MD, PhD, Division of Nephrology; Jeffrey Flier, MD, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism; Barbara Furie, PhD, Co-chief, Division of Hemostasis & Thrombosis; Barbara Kahn, MD, Chief, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism; Jerome Groopman, MD, Chief, Division of Experimental Medicine; Harold Dvorak, MD, Department of Pathology; Mitchell Rabkin, MD, Shapiro Institute; Clifford Saper, MD, PhD, Chairman, Department of Neurology; and George Tsokos, MD, Chief, Division of Rheumatology.
